OOC means Out Of Character

OOC talk should mainly be kept to IMs but when it is necessary to make a quick OOC comment, the comment should be typed between double parenthesis. Even better is to use an OOC tool. Many of which are available free on xstreet.

OOC example: ((brb - phone))

IC or In Character

Your Character won’t like every other Character.

Your Character might even get mad, be insulted, or be insulting

Your Character is not REQUIRED to be friends or be friendly with every other Character.

If your Character likes another Character, your Character will, most likely, want to be around that Character.

Your Character is not telepathic.

Your Character cannot know what someone just said in a thought emote.

Your Character is not omniscient ( all-knowing ).

If your Character did not see it, hear about it or read about it - your Character does not know about it.

If your Character emotes a thought, others cannot ‘know’ it and therefore can’t act on it.

Never use OOC or a thought emote to complain or insult.

TP out only either from dock or home.

The creation of your character is an important first step in any role-playing game

Role-play should always be fun and consensual.

- Take turns to post, respect the other player.

- Be patient, good ideas take time to create.

- Enjoy winning and losing equally.

- Learn by active role playing.

- Write something to which others can react.

- Adjust a bit to your fellow player's style of RP.

- Simply avoid the people whose style you dislike.

- Read some of the books but be careful not to become a quote monger.

- Pick up on hints given to you, pay attention to what other players are posting.

- Play a common character extraordinarily, not an extraordinary character commonly.

- Celebrate the difference between IC & OOC.

- Do not "powerplay", let others play too.

- Understand what metagaming is and take steps to avoid it. Don't deny yourself and other players, the pleasure of finding something out IC.

- Put your "human" on and don't be an asshole. Remember someone's behind that avatar.

- Accept that your story can and sometimes will change its path

- Accept IC responsibility for IC actions.

Metagaming:

When a person uses irrelevant OOC information or fail to use relevant OOC information in rp and thus puts his fellow RPer in an disadvantage position.

ex. to read someones name on the tag above their head and use that information in rp like greeting someone by name that you have never met IC yet and can´t possibly know the name of... or..by reading someones profile and there find out that the person is in disguise from his/hers actual character such as an assassin or a panther and then using it against them in RP by maybe suddenly develop a 6th sense and smell that it is a panther hiding under the robes of concealment. When someone uses the fact that in SL we can hear what is said in local chat withing 20 meters, even if on another side of a wall. Use means by rp to find out instead.

or..

by FAILING to use relevant OOC information in RP such as the fact that the person is a paragraph RPer and not waiting for the persons post and use that to his/hers disadvantage..like punishing a slave for not responding fast enough when it is in fact YOU who do not have the patience to wait for the post

or if the person is perhaps (Away from Keyboard) and you use that fact to do something to him/her that gives no opportunity to respond to.

Also..what goes on inside the privacy of your home or an enclosed room/building that is NOT for others to know about should be RPd in IMs. It is very annoying to hear someone having sex in local when one is discussing the price of a cake with the local baker. Always be considerate to your fellow players.

Powerplaying

When a person RP for you aka playing God

deciding your response by putting it in his/her own rp post.

Ex. -a person is RPing screaming so loud it made the people standing around cover their ears

no one can decide if you covers your ears except yourself. Or.. if i pick up a rock and throws it at your head 20 feet away and cause you to fall down. I can pick up a rock and aim it at your head and throw it..but YOU decide it it hits.

YOU can RP it hitting your head and falling down or just loosing your balance for a while..YOU decide if you pass out from it..or maybe if you see it coming and ducks..feeling the wind draft as it swooshes pass your head.

OR..a person might pick up a stone and throw it at your head..not meaning for it to hit but YOU decide it will hit. Maybe even cause serious injuries. This is what RP is about. it is an ongoing drama that all decide together what will happen and depending on what is decided new options and ways will open up to choose from. making the play turn in different directions, making it exciting. We play together and none but us decide where the story goes. But to make it fun and not cause people to get bored things need to happen still they need to be realistic. And it´s not when someone constantly avoid getting hit by other who throws stuff at them or shoots arrows.

We are not superman and if to unrealistic people wont play.

Godmodding

Creating a character that cannot be beaten, cannot die, is fantastically strong, immortal etc. is called godmodding.

In essence, godmodding is born out of a players resistance to losing. By making a character essentially godlike, it is impossible to lose. But in the end, engaging in this practice is a losers game, since other players will scorn you for it, and you will become a roleplay pariah.

Play it real.

Many times a new slave was whipped just to teach her to fear the whip and teach her that she was now under discipline and total domination of her owner and after that is was generally enough for a master to just move his hand to the hilt of his whip for the girl to behave and obey. Do not godmod and be a slave who is mouthy while her skin is being removed from her back by the whip. Would you in RL? No you wouldn't. Same goes for men who is fighting. When hit by a sword time and time again you don't just get up without a scratch just cause your meter says you have recovered. bleed, limp and fall down. Seek treatment for your wounds. On Gor the physicians have access to healing salve. You wont have to stay long in the infirmary before you have recovered fully but it will not only make it realistic, it will also add to RP.
